Collectively the CAMPER team, which is being run by Emirates Team New Zealand, brings a wealth of experience to the race. Team members have between them no less than three Olympic campaigns, 17 America’s Cups, 22 Volvo/Whitbread races and numerous world championship titles.
Emirates Team New Zealand are one of the most successful sailing teams in the world. The team became a household name in their home country following their consecutive wins in the America's Cup in 1995 and 2000. They became the first team from a country outside the United States to successfully win and then defend the America's Cup.
Their success has contributed to New Zealand's reputation for producing world-class sailors and boat designers. Since winning the Louis Vuitton Challenger series in 2007, the team has gone onto win consecutive championships during the TP52 Audi Med Cup circuit (2009/2010). They dominated the Louis Vuitton Trophy regattas in 2009/2010 winning four out of five events. In April 2011 the team announced their participation in the 34th edition of the America’s Cup.
A crew for a Volvo Open 70 is made up of 11 people: 10 sailors and a ‘Media Crew Member’ (MCM/onboard journalist).
Each crewmember has a specific role onboard the boat, as well as doubling up as sailmakers, engineers, and even a medic. Two crew members have had specific medical training so that they can deal with any injuries during the race.
